hippoIMAGE


Welcome to hippoIMAGE, a powerful texture browsing tool designed to make it much easier to browse, search and examine your texture collections. Features include:

  • Wide choice of browser designs, depending on how many textures you wish to see at once

  • View multiple textures at once, or tile or expand a single texture across the whole browser to see it in detail

  • Quickly navigate and find the texture you’re looking for

  • Search for a given set of textures; so if you’re building and want to only see textures with “brick” in the name, that’s easy

  • Easy access controls: allow friends, a group, or anybody, if you wish, to use your browser and copy textures from or into it

  • Duplicate checking: weed out identical textures with different names from your collections

  • Ability to sell textures to customers, so it can act as a simple texture vendor

1. Getting Started: Loading Images Into Your hippoIMAGE Texture Browser

In the ‘hippoIMAGE’ folder in your inventory you will find five different hippoIMAGE browser sizes:

  • hippoIMAGE v1.1 (2x2 panels)
    An 8 prim browser that shows 4 thumbnail images at once

  • hippoIMAGE v1.1 (3x3 panels)
    A 13 prim browser that shows 9 thumbnail images at once

  • hippoIMAGE v1.1 (4x4 panels)
    A 20 prim browser that shows 16 thumbnail images at once

  • hippoIMAGE v1.1 (5x5 panels)
    A 29 prim browser that shows 25 thumbnail images at once

  • hippoIMAGE v1.1 (6x4 panels)
    A 28 prim browser that shows 24 thumbnail images at once

Rez the hippoIMAGE browser size that you wish to use and wait while it loads its configuration notecard and reports readiness.

The next step is to add images or textures into it. Drag the images you want to add from your inventory (you can drag multiple selections if you wish) and while holding down the CTRL key on your computer keyboard, drop them onto the hippoIMAGE browser. After a few seconds, the browser will update with details of the new contents. (Ensure you hold down CTRL, or you risk *texturing* the browser itself). If you’re adding a large number of images, the inventory transfer will be more reliable if you release your mouse button over the grey outer frame of the browser, not one of the thumbnail panels.

TIP: If you prefer, you can right click the browser, choose ”Edit” (and “More>>>” if that button is showing), then click the ‘Contents’ tab and drag images directly to the browser’s inventory this way. This is a better way to add larger numbers of images in one go.

There is, theoretically, no limit to how many textures, images or snapshots a browser can hold; however, you may find that Second Life limits mean that very large inventories in a browser can eventually become slow and unwieldly.

IMPORTANT: Second Life limitations mean that only images/textures on which you have full permissions will work in your browser.




2. Navigating Your Texture Collection

Once you have some images loaded into your hippoIMAGE browser, you can ...

  • Use the left and right arrows on the bottom of the browser to navigate through your collection
TIP: To move to the first image, hold down your mouse for 2 seconds on the left arrow; to move to the last image, hold it down on the right arrow.
  • Click on an image thumbnail and pick “Tile” to see the image tiled across the whole browser, or “Zoom” to have it stretch to fill the whole display
TIP: When in zoom or tile mode, the navigation arrows continue to work, but move you just one image at a time, rather than a thumbnail set full.
  • You can also jump to an image for speed. Click the hippoIMAGE browser, choose “Jump To” and type an image number; e.g. to move to the thirteenth image, type 13 and press return. It is also possible to jump to a named image; so if you have an image called “Lake Windermere” somewhere that you wish to jump to, you’d click the browser, choose “Jump To” and then type part of the name ... in this example “winder” or “lake” would suffice.

  • The final navigation tool built into your browser is a search facility; you can tell your browser to only show images that match your search condition. Let’s suppose, for example, that you’d like to browse every image with “plant” in the name. Click the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the browser, then type ‘plant’ (without the quotemarks) and press return. The browser will now only show images whose names contain that word. To go back to show all images, click the browser and choose “Show All” from the menu.
  • TIP: In hippoIMAGE v1.5 or higher you can also search by creator key or texture key. Just type a key as the search term (e.g. e0c46def-86dc-4db8-9f5a-3e4be2e8a7db) and hippoIMAGE will find textures with that UUID key or textures created by an avatar with that UUID key. Remember you can find a texture’s key by right-clicking it in your inventory and choosing ‘Copy Asset UUID’ from the menu).

3. Summary of Menu Commands

There now follows a summary of each menu command you can use when clicking your browser (note, the menus that appear when you click a thumbnail are slightly different from those that appear if you click any other part of the browser ... commands in them will, in some cases, only effect the image you’ve clicked).

BROWSE Puts your hippoIMAGE browser into thumbnail navigation mode, so you can quickly and easily browse your images.
ZOOM Expand an image to fill the whole browser (either the image whose thumbnail you clicked or, if you just clicked the browser frame, the top left thumbnail image).
TILE Tile an image to across the whole browser (either the image whose thumbnail you clicked or, if you just clicked the browser frame, the top left thumbnail image).
JUMP TO Jump to a specific image by number or by name.
SEARCH Same as clicking the search button, allows you to enter some search text to filter images by.
LIST IMAGES Chats a list of each image in the browser (if you have just searched, it will only report images that match your criteria). Be careful; if you have a large inventory of textures in the browser, this can take a while to output!
STATUS Reports the browser’s current status (number of images, memory free).
RESET Reboots the browser. Use this after making any changes to its ‘_config’ notecard (see below).
DUPLICATES Allows you to search textures for all duplicates or just the first. A duplicate is a texture with an identical key but a different name — e.g. the same texture but named differently. Please note that scripts can only get keys for textures for which you all have full permissions, so any others will be ignored. If you use the “Find First” menu option after choosing “Duplicates”, you’ll be asked whether you want to automatically delete the duplicates it finds. (To avoid accidentally deleting swathes of textures, this is not offered on the “List All” duplicates option).
TOOLS Leads to a sub-menu that lets you copy images from one browser to another (within a sim). Simply pick “Transmit” on the sending hippoIMAGE browser then, within two minutes, pick “Receive” on the recipient browser (you can opt to delete its contents before it receives anything).

Version 1.5 or higher users will also find the “Adv List” tool, which lets you list all your images along with their UUID key and permissions (current owner, next owner). When viewing permissions, the abbreviations used are c(opy), m(odify) and t(ransfer). A capital letter (C, M, T) indicates that permission exists; a lower case letter (c, m, t) that it does not.

HELP Gives out a copy of this notecard.

When clicking an image thumbnail, there are also three extra menu options that will appear ...

GET COPY Gives out a copy of this particular image.
GET UUID Chats the UUID key of the image (if you don’t know what a Second Life UUID key is, don’t worry about this function!)
DELETE Deletes this image from the hippoIMAGE browser’s inventory (use with care).



4. The Configuration Notecard and Its Options

Inside your hippoIMAGE browser’s inventory is a notecard called ‘_config’. This contains some core system settings for your browser. To edit them, right click your browser, choose “Edit” from the Second Life pie-menu and then More>>> if that button is showing. Now click on the ‘Content’ tab and double click on the notecard called ‘_config’. Change the settings you wish (described below), don’t change words in CAPITALS. You can also add comment lines by prefixing them with // if you wish. Once you’re done, close and save the notecard, close the Second Life build dialog box, then click your hippoIMAGE browser and choose “Reset” from the menu to reset it and reload the changes you’ve made.

Here is a description of each command in the ‘_config’ notecard ...

WIDTH: <number of panels>
e.g. WIDTH: 2
- Defines how many thumbnail prims wide a browser is. Don’t play with this command unless you’re a builder modding your own browser type (see section 5 below).

HEIGHT: <number of panels>
e.g. HEIGHT: 4
- Defines how many thumbnail prims high a browser is. Don’t play with this command unless you’re a builder modding your own browser type (see section 5 below).

BLANK TEXTURE KEY: <UUID key>
e.g. BLANK TEXTURE KEY: 5b7b8a4c-7838-52aa-715d-b4e24d38ffbc
- Tells the browser what texture to apply to blank thumbnail panels. You can replace the default with an image of your choice by inserting its key here. (Keys can be obtained by right-clicking a texture in your inventory and selecting the ‘Copy Asset UUID’ menu option).

HOVERTEXT COLOUR: <Colour name or vector>
e.g. HOVERTEXT COLOUR: Yellow
- Chooses the colour used by the hovertext display over the vendor. You can either use a colour name (red, yellow, green, blue, white, black, pink) or a vector (e.g. HOVERTEXT COLOUR: <0.13, 0.5, 1>). For information on how Second Life colour vectors work, see https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Help:Color_and_Scripting

ALLOWED FRIENDS: <list of names>
e.g. ALLOWED FRIENDS: Samuel Vimes, Captain Carrot, Havelock Vetinari
- If you wish friends to be able to control your browser, add their names here, separated by commas.

ALLOW FRIEND ADD: <Yes/No>
e.g. ALLOW FRIEND ADD: Yes
- If set to yes, friends can add textures to your browser (by clicking it and choosing “Add Image” ... this will open the browser for inventory receipt for 15 seconds.)

ALLOW FRIEND DELETE: <Yes/No>
e.g. ALLOW FRIEND DELETE: Yes
- If set to yes, friends can delete textures from your browser.

ALLOW GROUP USE: <Yes/No>
e.g. ALLOW GROUP USE: Yes
- Set this to “Yes” and anybody wearing the same group tag as the group the hippoIMAGE browser is set to (use the Second Life build dialog box to assign it to a group) will be able to control it.

ALLOW GROUP ADD: <Yes/No>
e.g. ALLOW GROUP ADD: Yes
- If set to yes, group members can add textures to your browser (by clicking it and choosing “Add Image” ... this will open the browser for inventory receipt for 15 seconds.)

ALLOW GROUP DELETE: <Yes/No>

- If set to yes, group members can delete textures from your browser.

ANYBODY CAN USE: <Yes/No>

- Set this to “Yes” and anybody can use the browser to explore, search and get copies of the textures.

- If set to yes, anybody can add textures to your browser (by clicking it and choosing “Add Image” ... this will open the browser for inventory receipt for 15 seconds.)

- If set to yes, anybody can delete textures from your browser.

SELL TEXTURES: <Yes/No>

- Determines whether people can buy textures from this vendor.

TEXTURE PRICE: <L$ price per texture>
e.g. TEXTURE PRICE: 50
- Set the price per texture. Please note that due to the way deals with payment buttons and linked prims, you cannot specify individual prices per texture; you can only set *one general price* that will be applied to each texture. So if you have textures at different prices, use different hippoIMAGE units for each price.

ADD PURCHASERS TO HIPPOGROUP: <hippogroup name> (Version 1.5 and above only)
e.g. ADD PURCHASERS TO HIPPOGROUP: My Texture Sales Group
- If you’re using your hippoIMAGE browser to sell textures, you can choose to automatically add purchasers to a hippoGROUP. If you’re not a subscriber to hippoGROUPS, click here for more information!

AUTO REFUND: <Yes/No>
e.g. AUTO REFUND: Yes
- If you turn this on, the vendor will ask for debit permissions and will then be able to refund customers who accidentally pay a wrong amount or pay a blank texture panel in error.

VOLUME: <Whisper/Say/Shout/OwnerSay> (Version 1.5 and above only)
e.g. VOLUME: Whisper
- Instructs your hippoIMAGE unit whether it should whisper, say, shout (or ownersay) anything it chats.

SLIDESHOW MODE: <Off/On/First> (Version 1.5 and above only)
e.g. SLIDESHOW MODE: On
- Determines whether the hippoIMAGE unit runs in slideshow mode or not. If you choose “On”, the browser will cycle through its textures according to the delay times you set below. If you choose “First”, then after the start delay, the browser will flip back to the first image.

SLIDESHOW START AFTER: <time in seconds> (Version 1.5 and above only)
e.g. SLIDESHOW START AFTER: 15
- Determines how many seconds of inactivity (e.g. the browser not being touched) should pass before slideshow mode starts, if it's turned on.

SLIDESHOW DELAY: <time in seconds> (Version 1.5 and above only)
e.g. SLIDESHOW DELAY: 10
- Determines how many seconds should pass between changes if running in slideshow “on” mode?



5. Advanced Tricks: Creating a Custom-Sized hippoIMAGE Texture Browser

Whilst hippoIMAGE ships with a wide range of browser sizes, we have also made it possible, if you have reasonable building skills, to easily construct custom browser sizes. Thus if you wished to make a giant 10 x 10 thumbnail browser, that’s possible. Simple follow these steps ...

  1. Rez a hippoIMAGE browser and unlink it.

  2. Create new thumbnail panels by copying existing ones.

  3. Each thumbnail panel should be named “Panel x,y” where x and y are the coordinates of the thumbnail in the overall grid of thumbnail panels. The top left panel should be Panel 1,1 and, in our 10 x 10 example, the bottom right would be Panel 10,10. Be sure to name each panel correctly, or your browser will not work.

  4. Relink the browser, ensuring that the root prim remains the same as in the original you rezzed.

  5. Edit the _config notecard and change WIDTH and HEIGHT to your new values.

  6. Select the browser, then choose “Tools” from the Second Life menu bar, then “Reset Scripts in Selection”.

Provided you’ve done all these steps correctly, you’ll have a fully functional browser in your own custom size.



6. Using a hippoIMAGE Browser as a HUD (Version 1.6 and above only)

Simply right-click a hippoIMAGE browser in your inventory and choose “Attach to HUD” then pick a HUD position (we think ‘Center’ works the best). The hippoIMAGE browser will resize itself after a few seconds. (You can change how much it shrinks by in HUD mode by adjusting the HUD SCALE: <size> setting in its “_config” notecard.

Tip 1 -> To remove a HUD-worn hippoIMAGE browser, either click it (or its name in your inventory) and choose detach.

Tip 2 -> When you rez a hippoIMAGE browser that you have previously worn as a HUD, it will first appear quite small; simply wait a few seconds and it will resize itself to normal once again.
