Managers Module User Guide

Using the Manager Module tool built into the Hippo Technologies website, you can easily allow one or more friends or business partners to manage your web enabled products. What’s even cleverer is you can control what aspects of each product they can manage — want Fred Flintstone to be able to edit rental box configurations but not see payment logs? Want Rene Descartes to be able to create new hippoVEND products but not delete existing ones? It’s all possible.

You can add as many managers as you wish to your account, simply by purchasing the appropriate number of “management slots” — each slot you purchase will last for six months once bought, after which you will need to renew it. Simply read this page to discover how to do this and how to use your management slots once you’ve got them!

The Management Module works with hippoRENT, hippoVEND, hippoUPDATE, hippoTELL — and also your payment sharing lists. (It doesn’t work with hippoGROUPS, since that product already has its own manager tool built into it).

Remember that the Management Module allows your selected managers to login to the Hippo website and manage your items. It won’t enable them to use any of your inworld items.

Getting Started

Outside the main Hippo Technologies Store, to the left of the main entrance, you’ll see a set of Management Module Terminals.

You can click any one to check how many management slots you currently have or pay to purchase more slots. A management slot costs L$500 — so if you want four different managers, for example, pay a Terminal L$2,000. Please note that we use a subscription pricing model — so each slot you buy is good for six months, after which it will expire. Once you’ve paid a Terminal, it will chat to confirm how many management slots you now have available.

Creating a Manager

Once you’ve purchased one or more management slots, login to the users area of the Hippo Technologies website. At the bottom of the page, you’ll see an icon like this one ...

... click it to open the managers page, where you’ll see a list of any existing managers you’ve created. Using this page is really simple:

  • To create a new manager, click the button and type the name of the manager into the field that will appear. Make sure you type it exactly as it appears in Second Life (e.g. “john smith” is not the same as “John Smith”). Then hit OK.

  • To edit a manager, click the icon to the right of their name. Then see the section below on assigning privileges to a manager.

  • To delete a manager, click the icon. (You can also delete multiple managers at once by ticking their names, then clicking the button).

Please note that we need to know a person’s Second Life key to add them as a manager. If we don’t, an error message will appear explaining how you can get them registered with us.

Once you’ve created a manager and added some privileges for them (see below), the final section of this page will explain how they can login and manage the products you have enabled for them.

Assigning Privileges

Once you have created a manager, you can edit their details and decide what management privileges you wish to grant them. Click the icon to the right of a manager’s name and you will see a list of all the privileges you can assign for each product you use — hippoRENT, hippoVEND, hippoUPDATE and hippoTELL (and also sharing groups). Only those products that are currently active (e.g. whose icons are lit up on the front page of the users area) will have their privilege sets appear for you to edit for a manager.

Some Useful Information

  • Remember that all these privileges apply to what a manager can do on the Hippo website. They don’t allow them to use your items (e.g. vendors) inworld.

  • Be careful what privileges you grant (and, of course, you do so at your own risk). Make sure you can trust your friends or managers with whatever privileges you grant them! You might want to consider testing with an alt to be sure you’ve got things set up correctly and you understand how the system works.

  • In order to use the privileges granted, a manager needs to log in to the Hippo website. If they already use one or more of our web-enabled products, that’s easy. If they don’t, then they’ll need to obtain a website registration pass. One can be purchased from the vendor next to the Management Module payment terminals outside the main Hippo Technologies Store inworld. (It’s not transferable, so your manager needs to buy it; you cannot buy it for them!) They can then click this icon near the bottom of the welcome screen after they’ve logged in ...

... and pick the product they want to manage. (If they’ve been granted management rights by people other than you, each person for whom they have rights will be listed in a table).
